Sardine carrier Mary Anne launch prep, Thomaston, 1947, 1947

Contributed by Rockland Historical Society

Description

Workers at the Newbert and Wallace shipyard preparing the launch of the sardine carrier, Mary Anne in Thomaston. The vessel was built for Moses Bernard Pike of Lubec for his Holmes Packing Company, and named for his daughters.

Herring, caught in a net or seine, were pumped by a vessel called a seiner into the hold of a sardine carrier for transport to factories. Most sardine carrier boatyards used steam-bent timbers. The Newbert and Wallace firm of Thomaston, used sawed 6 x 6-inch timbers exclusively. The stiffer construction reduced leakage.
