Apple orchard, Orchard Road, Cumberland, May 1945

Contributed by Prince Memorial Library

Description

In 1922 or 1923, Herman Sweetser of Cumberland planted two 20-acre apple orchards on Orchard Road in Cumberland.

Ray Seekins, left, and Dick Sweetser, Herman's son, are inspecting the trees after a late spring snow storm.

Dick Sweetser had just been drafted, and after graduating early from Greely Institute would shortly leave town for service in the U.S. Army. Herman Sweetser was a professor of horticulture at the University of Maine at Orono who returned to Cumberland to run the family orchard.

The orchard later was sold to Arvid Terison and became the Double T Orchard when Arvid's son Tom Terison took it over.
