Description
This post card shows a view of Main Street in Bangor, looking down towards Exchange Street and West Market Square. Freeses department store occupies much of the right side of the street; opened in 1892 by A. Langdon Freese, the store rapidly expanded until it was known as "Fifth Avenue in Maine" until in 1957 it was sold to the Gorin chain. Signs along the street hint at the wide variety of goods on sale, and the closely parked cars emphasise the convenience of the trolley.
