Description
President Franklin Roosevelt, stricken with polio on Campobello Island across from Lubec in 1921, did not return to his family summer home until after the famous “100 days” following his 1933 inauguration. A skilled boatsman, he determined to sail up the New England coast. Son James as “first mate“ chartered the 45-foot seagoing schooner Amberjack II and the party left Massachusetts on June 18, followed by Navy and Coast Guard vessels.
Roosevelt said, “This is my vacation and I am going to stay aboard this boat the whole two weeks.” (Page 239 in the book "FDR" by Jean Edward Smith, Random House, 2007.) On June 29, 1933 Roosevelt sailed through Lubec Narrows and soon tied up at the family dock.
