Description
Twelve years after he was stricken with polio on Campobello Island a few miles from Lubec, Franklin Delano Roosevelt triumphantly returned, followed by two destroyers, three Coast Guard cutters, the new heavy cruiser Indianapolis, and press boats. At the tiller of the Amberjack II (named for a 35-pound Atlantic fish), Roosevelt sailed through Lubec Narrows and past Mulholland Lighthouse, partially obscured by a sail in this image. He later said, “I came through the Narrows and saw the line of fishing boats and people...” (P240 "FDR" by Jean Edward Smith, Random House, 2007.) He may be seen seated in the stern wearing a pulled-down white cap.
Once on Campobello, Roosevelt spoke from the rear seat of a car about the final hours of the his sea journey when he entered the fog so common this time of year at the entrance to Lubec Channel. The following day Roosevelt was quoted in the New York Times relating that “when we were beginning to come out of the fog off Quoddy Head, the boys on the lookout in the bow called out “land ahead.” Nevertheless, memory kept me going full speed ahead because I knew the place was Lubec Narrows.”
