Description

The "Safe Guard" was an 1880 Hunneman hand engine from Kennebunk. This image, taken in Saco around 1910, was probably taken during a hand-pumper competition, which were common at the time. Water was hand-pumped from the water reservoir through a nozzle to put out the fire. When the water in the reservoir was running low, the "bucket brigades" were responsible for refilling it.
