Description
This photograph was taken just before a newly rebuilt Thornton Academy opened for its first classes in September, 1889. Thornton Academy was chartered in 1811, the third oldest high school in York County. The original building burnt in 1848, but due to complex financial and political factors, the building was not replaced for decades.
