Description
This is a seiner, a very small example named Seven Sons. She has a fishnet called a purse seine on the stern, as well as the seine boat. When herring are found on the scanner or by plane, the seine boat pulls the seine off the seiner. The seine has floats on the top and weights on the bottom to hold the net down. The seine boat circles the herring, and makes a round “corral.” The seiner then pulls a rope back that is run through rings attached to the bottom of the seine, closing up like a woman’s purse. Hence the term purse seine. The seiner then “dries up” the seine using the large hydraulic “seine block” mounted at the top of the boom. The fish are then pumped into the hold after passing through the descaler (to remove the scales which are used to manufacture pearl essence) and dewatered. The seine boat is then pulled back aboard. Data by Captain Bob Peacock.
