Description
Sergeant J.E. "Ned" Mitchell wrote to Persis Blanchard of Cumberland from Relay House, Maryland. He was a member of the 10th Maine Regiment on rail line patrol duty.
Mitchell wrote that he had been in the hospital for a fortnight. He previously had written that he was suffering with chills and fever.
He reported that he was being well cared for and mentioned the names of nurses and the doctor.
He wrote, "If war is declared with England I shall expect to see you with that company of girls." He suggested that the girls could compel the soldiers to lay down arms without a fight.
Mitchell addressed Blanchard as "sister," but the two were not siblings.
