Lucy Collins from Michigan to Persis Blanchard, 1854

Contributed by Maine Historical Society

Description

Persis Blanchard (1836-1870) corresponded regularly with Lucy Collins of Michigan, who apparently had been her childhood friend in Cumberland.

Collins wrote to Blanchard on Sept. 11, 1854 about her marriage to Jeremiah C. Collins on June 3, 1853. Jeremiah Collins was a millwright who was working with Blanchard's father in establishing a mill at White River in Michigan.

She said he grew up in Ohio where his father was a printer who published the first abolitionist paper in the U.S. Her new husband also owned a large farm in Port Washington, Wisconsin.

Collins describes her wedding dress -- spotted Swiss muslin with flowing under sleeves. She wore white kid gloves and got a Cornelian ring and a gold one.
