Description

Potato fields in Aroostook County bloom from late June through mid-July. The blossoms range in color from white to pink and pale purple.

Potatoes are not dependent on the fertilization of their flowers for propagation because potatoes are grown from pieces of potato containing one or more "eyes." The seeds produced by potato plants are genetically too variable to be useful for food production. The seeds are used in the development of new varieties.
