Description
Josiah Pierce (1827-1913), son of Josiah and Evelina Lewis Pierce of Gorham, spent most of his adult life overseas.
An 1846 graduate of Bowdoin College, Pierce studied law, then sought a diplomatic post. He was sent to St. Petersburg, Russia, where he served from 1855-1858. He remained in Russia and worked as a lawyer for a company with railroad interests in Russia.
Francis D. Millett, the cousin of Pierce's second wife, Isabella Millett, painted the portrait.
