Description
The Passamaquoddy Ferry Company, serving Lubec, North Lubec, Eastport, and Canada’s Campobello Island, began operation in 1882 under sails. Eventually the first steamer "Spray" gave way, in 1891, to the fine new "Lubec." Built by Joseph Dyer of Portland expressly for this route, she was 69.5 feet long, 18 feet beam, 51 tons with 50 horsepower and carried up to 350 passengers with the comforts of steam heat and electric lights. According to the article “Notes on the Maritime History of Lubec” by Frank P. Adams, Sr., in 1918 she was she was documented as a freighter. “In 1938 her horsepower was increased to 100 and she was documented for towing and owned by John R. Brown of Bangor through 1942, when she disappeared from the marine records.”
