Description
A carte-de-visite of the gravesite of Alexander "Sacha" Pierce (1867-1874), son of Josiah and Martha Lander Pierce.
Sacha was born in St. Petersburg, Russia, where the Pierces lived for a number of years while Josiah was on business there. He and his mother and siblings, Josiah and Eliza, moved back to Portland in about 1868.
His mother died in 1873 and in 1874, his father took the children to England, where he then lived. Sacha died three months later of diphtheria. Eliza died in England in 1877 of meningitis.
