Josiah Pierce to Anne Pierce, Russia, 1865

Contributed by Maine Historical Society

Description

Josiah Pierce (1827-1913) wrote to his aunt Anne Longfellow Pierce of Portland from St. Petersburg, Russia, where he worked for Winans, Harrison and Winans, a company largely concerned with railroad development.

He comments on his return to Russia, where he had lived for about 10 years, and that his wife, Martha Lander Pierce, and two children would remain in Portland.

He said that Martha and her sisters had sought such a separation for several years. The couple was reunited for a short time several years later.

Pierce had lived with his aunt for a while before he received a diplomatic assignment to Russia in 1855.
