Description
A native of North Lubec, Myron Haliburton Avery (1899-1952) was an admiralty lawyer for the federal government in Washington, D.C. The first 2000-miler of the Appalachian Trail, he served as the Trail Conference's chairman from 1931 until his death in 1952. This photograph shows Avery and one of the many trail markers he placed.
Avery also was very keen on having the Katahdin area designated as a national park and he did a great deal of research and made numerous trips to photograph features of the area. He also wrote extensively about North Lubec history and published in the Lubec Herald newspaper.
After his death a mountain on Maine’s Appalachian Trail was renamed “Avery Peak.”
Most of Avery’s papers relating to the development of the Appalachian Trail in Maine are housed in the Maine State Library. The Fogler Library at the University of Maine has a collection of Avery’s glass slides from his Katahdin studies. A small collection of his pertinent papers are held by the Lubec Historical Society.
