Description
"The alley and lot on which stands the Prescott store at the left are now occupied by the First National Bank. The Dyer store, as will be noted by the sign, is now occupied by Issac Dyer and George Cushing, under the firm name of Dyer and Cushing.
On the building to the right may be seen the sign of Emery & Turner, grocers. This was Asa Emery and Charles K. Turner. The latter served as Town Clerk for many years. A sign still farther to the right, on the second story, is that of the Somerset Reporter, indicating that the local paper was issued there in those days. Then, or at some later period, while this was a printing office, power was furnished by a very unique method. An endless rope ran from a wheel near the dam at the foot of the island diagonally across the north channel, connecting with a wheel in the printing o0ffice. From this, by means of counter shafts, power was delivered to the presses. Simeon S. Sawyer, an aged and retired printer was the source of this tale.
Stephen Coburn's law office was reached by the stairway in the center. Mr. Coburn was of the famous Coburn family, of which Governor Abner Coburn was the most distinguished member. The Sign, "A. & S. Coburn," indicated that Abner and Stephen, just mentioned and Henry Wyman, father of Henry A.. by whom this compilation of pictures was made possible. In this picture the sign "H. A. Wyman," appears. This is the Henry A. already referred to as later or earlier being a partner with Stephen Coburn.
