Contributed by Maine Historical Society
Description
Josiah Pierce (1827-1913), a native of Gorham who worked as an attorney for Winans, Harrison & Winans in London, thanked his brother Lewis (1832-1915), a Portland lawyer, for obtaining endorsement letters from Maine officials regarding the bust of poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow at Westminister Abbey.
Longfellow, a native of Portland, died in 1882. The bust was installed at Poet's Corner in 1884 after a committee of notable British men wrote letters supporting the idea.
The poet's sister Anne Longfellow Pierce sought the donation of those letters to the Maine Historical Society. She asked for the help of her nephews, among others, to secure the letters. Henry O. Houghton of Boston also sought the letters.
