Josiah Pierce on Longfellow bust letters, 1884

Contributed by Maine Historical Society

Description

Josiah Pierce (1827-1913) of London wrote to his brother Lewis Pierce (1832-1915) of Portland reporting on the progress of the efforts to secure for the Maine Historical Society British letters of support for the Longfellow bust at Poet's Corner at Westminster Abbey.

The Pierces, both lawyers, were working with their aunt, Anne Longfellow Pierce, the sister of poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, to arrange donation of the letters. Henry O. Houghton of Boston also sought the letters.

Pierce also wrote to his brother about family genealogy and various family members including his son, Joe, their brother George (1836-1910) and cousin Charles Freeman, who Josiah and Lewis were helping to support and care for.
