Description
As part of an effort to secure for the Maine Historical Society in Portland letters written by British dignitaries in support of a bust of poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1807-1882), Lewis Pierce of Portland forwarded an endorsement of the idea from Samuel Longfellow (1819-1892), the poet's brother, to Josiah Pierce, who lived in London.
Anne Longfellow Pierce, the poet's sister and the aunt of Lewis and Josiah Pierce, was helped to spearhead the effort to get the letters to Portland.
