Description
Josiah Pierce (1827-1913), a native of Gorham who lived in London, wrote to his aunt Anne Longfellow Pierce (1810-1901) in Portland about various friends and relatives.
Pierce mentions that Henry Houghton should soon deliver to the Maine Historical Society a collection of letters from members of the Longfellow Memorial Committee, formed to support placing a bust of poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Anne Pierce's brother, in Poet's Corner at Westminster Abbey.
Houghton, of Boston, secured the letters but was to follow the family's wishes in their disposal. The family requested that the letters go the Historical Society in Portland.
Before Josiah Pierce went overseas in 1855, he lived with his Aunt Anne in Portland and he refers to those times and to some notes he acquired then relating to Bowdoin College and Anne's husband, George Washington Pierce who died in 1835.
