Description

Josiah Pierce of London wrote to his aunt Anne Longfellow Pierce expressing his delight in seeing photographs in a magazine of "the familiar old Longfellow house."

Pierce (1827-1913), a native of Gorham, lived with his aunt in the Wadsworth-Longfellow House in Portland while he was studying law and first practicing law.

In 1855, Pierce received a diplomatic appointment to St. Petersburg, Russia. He lived abroad most of his adult life.
