Letter concerning road to Houlton, Washington, D.C., 1828

Contributed by Maine Historical Society

Description

Maine Sen. John Chandler (1762-1841) wrote from Washington, D.C., to Gen. Isaac Hodsdon (1781-1864) of the Maine Militia about a petition Hodsdon had sent requesting that a road be built to Houlton.

Chandler noted that he had introduced a resolution for a military road from "the mouth of the Mattawamkeag to Mars Hill."

He suggested that the governor, Enoch Lincoln, request a company of troops to protect the border, a precursor to a road being ordered.
