Description
Both this portrait of Louise Caroline (Wilcox) Putnam and the frame were brought back from China by Louise Caroline (Wilcox) Putnam (1822-1894) after one of her voyages there with her husband William. Louise accompanied her husband, Captain William E. Putnam, on at least two voyages to China in the mid-1800s. Captain Putnam was part of the China trade, commanding several ships including the Empress of the Seas and the Roman.
Note the elaborately decorated, carved and pierced wide teak wood frame, composed of complex birds, flowers, scrolls and geometric motifs. The frame was not original to the painting: it appears to be jury rigged. There are two similar frames still in the family's possession.
