Description
S. C. Stinson of Gardiner made this ambrotype portrait of an unidentified young man with a large, plaid bow tie.
The label on the back of the case advertises ”From / S.C. Stinson’s / Ambrotype rooms / over / Thwing’s Bookstore / Gardiner, Me. / This style picture for / 20 cents. / Cases 25 cents.”
Ambrotypes are negative images printed on glass with a blackened back so that the image appears positive. According to the writer Beaumont Newhall, the term "ambrotype" was coined by Marcus A. Root to mean "imperishable picture".
