Description
John Calvin Stevens created a perspective watercolor presentation drawing of proposed changes at Westbrook Junior College in Portland in 1937.
Goddard Hall, built in 1857 and opened in 1858, is at the left. In the center is Hersey Hall, which opened in 1869, redesigned to feature the large portico in the center and the tower, similar to the one on Alumni Hall, which is to the right and perpendicular to the buildings shown. At right is a proposed new building, connected by a low hallway to Hersey.
The renovations and addition pictured were not done in 1937. In 1951, the new structure, later named Proctor Hall, was built to the right of Hersey, largely following the Stevens' design.
When Goddard was built, college literature announced: "A brick building, for a Gentlemen's Boarding House, which accommodates sixty students with retired apartments, has been recently erected on the Seminary grounds, and is now in successful operation."
