Description
The John Calvin Stevens architectural firm of Portland submitted sketches and a site plan for a new Portland City Hall. The firm was one of several that submitted sketches; the Stevens firm was not selected for the project.
The new structure, designed by Carrere and Hastings, completed in 1912, was the fourth building to serve as City Hall. The first, in Market Square, was built in 1825. It was replaced by a new, larger structure on Congress Street at the head of Exchange Street in 1860. That building burned in the Fire of 1866 and was rebuilt. It burned again in 1908, necessitating a new structure.
