Description
Portrait of George Burnham who founded the Burham and Morrill Company, manufacturer of canned foods and most famous for B & M Baked Beans.
He and his father, also named George, operated a cooperage and coastal fishing and trading business.
George Burnham began in the canning business packing meat, fish, clams, poultry and lobster in the 1840s with a partnership called Rumery & Burnham in Harpswell.
In 1867 Rumery & Burnham was dissolved and George Burnham joined with John E. Burnham and Charles Morrill in a packing company in Portland and the Burnham & Morrill Company was incorporated.
