Description
Sally Sayward Barrell (1737-1805) married Nathaniel Barrell (1732-1831) in 1758 in York. They were the parents of "Madame Wood," the famous Maine novelist.
This portrait was painted by Sally and Nathaniel Barrell's granddaughter, Charlotte Sewall Eastman, in 1889. It is a copy of a Joseph Blackburn painting done in 1761.
Charlotte Sewall Eastman was the ninth child of Hannah (Barrell) and David Sewall. She was born in Hallowell on September 22, 1816 and died May 25, 1896.
After the death of her husband, Benjamin Eastman, a congressman from Wisconsin in 1856, Charlotte traveled extensively and lived abroad for several years. She returned to York in 1879.
