Description
George Thornton Edwards (1868-1932) wrote a quartet for mixed voices entitled "State of Maine, My State of Maine."
The song was the "society song" by State of Maine Societies throughout the nation, was used by granges in Maine as part of the service in conferring some degrees, was sung at the 1920 Maine Centennial, and was often sung by school children.
Edwards, who wrote many other pieces of music was an organist and pianist for the Arden Coombs Orchestra and choral conductor of the State Liberty Chorus. He also was an author, writing for various magazines.
He wrote Music and Musicians of Maine: being a history of the progress of music in the territory which has come to be known as the State of Maine, from 1604 to 1928 and The Youthful Haunts of Longfellow.
