Description
Emilius N. Small of Mount Vernon is shown in his infantry uniform when he was about 21.
He enlisted on August 14, 1862 as a sergeant and was mustered the same day into Company A of the 16th Maine Infantry. He was discharged for disability on March 2, 1863, but re-enlisted on December 11, 1863 as a sergeant major of the 2nd Maine Cavalry.
On January 1, 1865, he was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant and transferred from Field & Staff to Company M.
Small was mustered out on December 6, 1865 at Barnacus, Florida.
