Description
Written on this card is, "Respectfully yours J. D. Maxfield...Major, Volunteer Recruiting Service."
James D. Maxfield of Newport, 24, enlisted on August 14, 1862 into Company A of the 16th Maine Infantry.
He was a captain's clerk and later promoted to Sergeant Major in 1863.
He was discharged for disability in September 1863, but then worked for the state of Maine to gain or process new recruits.
