Description
Susannah W. Cary of Houlton, wife of prominent lumber dealer and civic leader Shepard Cary, owned this gold filigree ring with an emerald stone.
Cary appears to be wearing the ring in a portrait of her that Albert Tracy painted in 1840.
The ring probably was made in England and details suggest it was made after 1830.
Susannah Whitaker, who was from New Salem, Massachusetts, married Shepard Cary Dec. 25, 1832. It is possible the ring was her wedding ring.
