Description
William Whipple was born in Kittery, went to sea to earn his fortune, and in 1759 joined in a partnership with his brother in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, as a merchant.
He served in the Continental Congress through 1779, became Brigadier General of the New Hampshire Militia in 1777 during the American Revolution, and was a signer of the Declaration of Independence.
Page Walter Gilman painted this portrait in 1900, copying the face from a painting by John Turnbull (1756-1843).
