Description
Luther Jewett (1793-1856) of Portland worked for the U.S. Customs Service, serving as collector of customs and superintendent of Maine lighthouses.
Jewett reportedly concerned himself not only with the structural integrity of Maine's lighthouses but with his lighthouse keepers' soundness of character as well, valuing men not given to excessive use of spirits and experienced sailors who understood the importance of a good light.
