Description
Emilus N.D. Small of Mt. Vernon (1843-ca. 1911) enlisted in Company A of the 16th Maine Infantry on August 14, 1862 at age 21.
He was mustered out on March 2, 1863 for disability. He was promoted to full sergeant major on December 11, 1863.
He re-enlisted in Co. S of the 2nd Maine Cavalry in December 1863 and served two more years. He was promoted to full 2nd lieutenant on January 1, 1865. He was mustered out on Dec. 6, 1865 in Florida.
This is from a collection of card photographs belonging to Abner R. Small, the older brother of Emilus. Written on this card is "Yours muchly, Small, E.N.D. 2nd Me. Cav."
After the war, Emilus Small was a tailor and merchant in Lewiston.
