Description
Major General George B. McClellan and his wife Ellen Mary Marcy are shown together in this carte de visite that was part of a collection of Maine soldier Maj. Abner B. Small of Waterville, who served in the 3rd Maine before receiving a commission in the newly formed 16th Maine Regiment.
McClellan, a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania and West Point, commanded the Army of the Potomac and served as general-in-chief of the Union armies before President Abraham Lincoln relieved him of his duties for failing to carry out orders and attack the Confederate army.
