Description
Winfield Scott Hancock (1824-1886) of Pennsylvania, named after a general from the War of 1812, graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in 1844.
He served in the Mexican-American War and the Third Seminole War and commanded troops in a number of battles during the Civil War, including Antietam and Gettysburg, where his troops faced Pickett's Charge. He was wounded in the leg at Gettysburg.
Hancock ran as a Democrat for President in 1880. He was defeated by James A. Garfield.
