Contributed by an individual through Colby College Special Collections
Description
Hiram Adelman, an immigrant from Russia, didn’t like the climate in New York City, so someone told him to head north.
He took this advice to heart and rode the train as far north as it went at the time — to Houlton. There, he established one of the largest potato businesses in Aroostook County.
He is listed in the 1910 and 1930 censuses as a clothing or dry goods dealer.
Adelman came to the U.S. in 1903; his wife, Catherine Goldsmith, also from Russia, came in 1904. They married in 1909.
