Description
Thomas Badger painted this portrait of Henry Alexander Scammell Dearborn (1783-1851) of Portland.
Dearborn worked in Portland as a lawyer after graduating from William and Mary College in 1803. He oversaw the construction of Fort Preble and Fort Scammel in Portland Harbor in 1808.
In the war of 1812 he was a brigadier general commanding the volunteers in the defenses of Boston Harbor.
He wrote many magazine articles using the pen names "Nearchus" and "Massasoit." He also wrote the book, History of Navigation and Naval Architecture.
