Description
Eliza McLellan Mayall (1822-1849) painted this portrait of Joseph Hicks (1747-1844) of North Yarmouth in about 1840.
Mayall was the daughter of Anna Hicks (1777-1843) and Samuel Mayall, a native of England who operated a textile milll in Gray. He died in 1831. She may have painted the portrait of her grandfather when she was 18 and Joseph Hicks was about 93 years old.
The Mayalls had three daughters, Phanela, Mary, and Eliza, and their mother, Anna Hicks, taught them to paint and to enjoy literature and art.
In 1844, Eliza Mayall married Ezra T. Williams (1811-1862). They had three children; none survived to adulthood.
