Description
Henry S. Burrage (1837-1926) was a noted Maine historian who served as the first State Historian from 1907 until his death.
A native of Fitchburg, Massachusetts, he completed one year at the Newton Theological Seminary before enlisting in the 36th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry in 1861.
Wounded at Cold Harbor, he was captured and spent time in Libby Prison in Virginia.
After the war he completed his degree in theology and served as pastor at the First Baptist Church in Waterville. He was editor of Zion's Advocate, a statewide Baptist newspaper, and was a trustee of Colby college from 1881-1906.
He wrote many publications about Maine's colonial history and served as president of the Maine Historical Society from 1921-1922.
His daughter, Mildred G. Burrage (1890-1983) painted this portrait. She spent years traveling and painting throughout Europe and the United States and eventually settled in Wiscasset.
Mildred Burrage was a founder of the Lincoln County Cultural and Historical Association and helped preserve the old Wiscasset Jail House.
