Description
Clara Neptune of the Penobscot Nation sat during the Maine Centennial, June 28-July 5, 1920 at the "Indian Village" in Deering Oaks Park in Portland.
Wabanaki people set up structures and engaged in traditional crafts as a cultural demonstration for the public.
This image was on the front page of the June 29, 1920 edition of the Portland Evening Express, with the caption, which incorrectly identified her: "Susan Neptune enjoying quiet smoke at Passamaquoddy Village in Deering Oaks."
