Description
Alvin Haynes of Mattawamkeag wrote to Co. George F. Shepley of the 12th Maine Infantry Volunteers in December 1861 recommending his brother-in-law, D.B. Chesley, as a solider in whom Shepley could place confidence.
David B. Chesley of Lincoln was 19 when he enlisted on Nov. 15, 1861 as a sergeant in Co. F of the 12th Maine. He was later promoted to full lieutenant.
Alvin Haynes, a lawyer, was close to 60 years old and wrote, "were I not quite so old I would be with you..."
