Description
The Paymaster machine belonged to Levine's: The Store for Men and Boys that began in 1891 in Waterville.
William Levine, who was a peddler before starting the store, reportedly came to Maine because licenses for peddling were less expensive than in Massachusetts.
The machine was used to write checks that could not easily be tampered with.
