Description
The Rev. James Lewis (1770-1855) of Gorham was a Methodist minister who reportedly never accepted money for preaching.
He married Hannah Harding in 1793. The couple had 12 children.
The artist was Charles Octavius Cole (1814-1858), a renowned portrait painter who also did some landscapes, worked in New Orleans from 1838 to 1842, then settled in Portland until at least 1856.
