Description
Mildred Burrage of Kennebunkport (1890-1983) received a commission to create murals in the new Science Library at Bryn Mawr College in Pennsylvania in about 1940.
The college asked for a map of geology at one end of the room and a map of chemical elements at the other end. She was to base her work on a chart in Outline of Historical Geology, but given the freedom to design the murals and choose how to represent the stories.
She worked with faculty members at Bryn Mawr on the project.
The panels, over fireplaces at each end of the room, were 7'11" by 10'4" and framed to enclose both the art and the fireplaces.
