Description
Rabbi Morris Bekritsky of Congregation Shaarey Tphiloh in Portland founded the Portland Hebrew Day School at the Newbury Street synagogue in 1952, a few years before the congregation built a new synagogue on Noyes Street.
The school was an outgrowth of the Portland Hebrew School on Pearl street.
In 1969, the school became known as Hillel Academy and later as the Levey Day School. It moved to several locations before settling in the new education win of Temple Beth El on Deering Avenue in 2003.
