William B. Adams on progress of war, generals, Maryland, 1863

Description

William B. Adams of Raymond, a fifer in the 5th Maine Infantry, wrote to his sister Dorothy (Dora) from near Westminster, Maryland, reporting that his regiment had been marching for five days and had covered more than 20 miles each day.

He asked her to ask their father what he thought about Gen. George McLellan vs. Burnside and the Army of the Potomac.

Adams was 18 when he enlisted in June 1861. He served through the duration of the war.
