Description
William B. Adams of Raymond, a private in Co. B of the 1st Maine Veteran Volunteers in Virginia, wrote to his sister Dora in Maine about being on alert and expecting to be ordered to march soon.
He noted that generals Grant, Sheridan, Sherman, and others, along with President Lincoln held a "Council of War," after which his unit received marching orders.
"Tomorrow we expect a terrible battle," he wrote on March 30, 1865, slightly over a week before Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee surrendered.
